BCLC Reminds Adults To Present Lottery Responsibly

Christmas is just around the corner, and with that comes one of the busiest periods for lottery sales in Canada. That's why British Columbia Lottery has restarted its annual #GiftSmart public information campaign. It aims to remind parents and adults in the province not to take responsibility for their gifts and buy lottery tickets as gifts for children.

It is quite common for parents to put lottery tickets in their children's Christmas socks, but the BCLC warns that lottery tickets are still a form of gambling. With the return of the #GiftSmart initiative, Crown Company will notify more than 3,500 lottery outlets across the country in advance. In addition, messages appear on social media channels.

Peter Ter Weeme, Crown's Chief Social Purpose Officer and Vice President of Player Experience, said BCLC promoted responsible play and raised awareness about the dangers of underage gambling. He said research continues to show that children exposed to gambling at a young age are much more likely to develop gambling-related problems.

For the public information campaign, BCLC works with the National Commission on Problem Gambling and the International Centre for Youth Gambling at McGill University. And through this initiative, Crown is trying to provide residents with information and education about the risks associated with presenting lottery tickets to minors as part of an overall strategy to promote responsible play.

Studies have shown that minors have their first gambling experience at the age of 9-11, and about 60% of high school students have actually gambled for money in the past year. In addition, between 10 and 14 percent of teenagers are at risk of developing gambling problems, while between 4 and 6 percent are currently experiencing serious gambling problems.

With these findings, the National Women's Professional Golf Association (BLCL) urges parents and adults to speak frankly and honestly with their children about the dangers of gambling. Adults can find more information on how to gift smarts on the Crown's website (gamesensce.com ). This portal provides parents with information, tools, ideas, and materials for families on how to participate in conversations about betting with minors.

In August 2022, Crown Agency released its official financial and highlights report for the 2021/2022 financial year. In the fiscal year, BCLC reported revenue of C$2.362 billion and net income of C$1.314 billion from land-based and online gambling activities. The results for 21/22 are a significant increase from those for the previous fiscal year.

BCLC offers regulated gambling and sports betting options on the PlayNow.com platform. Recently, Crown reminded bettors that the website is the only legitimate website in the state, and users contribute to BC's economy by playing on it. The platform has technical integrit
