Nepal Govt Cancels 3 Casino Licenses Over Nonpayment of Fees: Report

Nepal's tourism ministry revoked each of its three casinos in Nepal after operators allegedly failed to pay unpaid tariffs and renewal fees within the deadline set by the country's authorities, the Himalayan Times newspaper reported.

According to local authorities, the licenses of Rock International Pvt Ltd, Happy Our Kathmandu, and Oriental Hotel (Radison Hotel) Rajimpa were revoked under the local casino regulations enacted in 2013. The report said that the three casinos came after they failed to pay outstanding fees totaling 95.5 million yen ($7.4 million).

The outlet quoted Tourism Ministry official Kemraj Joshi as saying the government was forced to take legal action because the three casinos "ignored" to pay dues despite "repeated public notices."

The official said a letter was sent to the Interior Ministry and police headquarters on March 29 asking them to carry out the decision to revoke the licenses of the three casinos.

In September last year, some casinos in Nepal reportedly reopened after being shut for about 18 months due to restrictions imposed by the government on the COVID-19 pandemic. All game venues in Nepal have been closed since authorities imposed the first lockdown on March 24, 2020.
